A. Simple Past Tense

Usage: menceritakan kejadian yang terjadi di masa lalu dan menekankan pada waktu tertentu.

Time Signal:  

· Yesterday / Yesteryear

· Last…….

· ………….Ago

· Just Now

· This morning

Formula: (S + V2 + O + Time Signal) ( S + Was / Were + Noun/Adj  + TS )

                (S + Didn’t + V1 + O + TS) (S + WAS / were + not + Noun / Adj + TS)

                (did +S +V1+O+TS) (Was/were + S + Noun / Adj + TS)

Was: I, he, she, it

Were: You, they, we

Example:

1.      Aku menulis surat bulan lalu

(+) I wrote a letter last month

(-)  I didn’t write a letter last month

(?)  Did I write a letter last month ?

2.      Kelas itu kotor tadi pagi

(+) The class was dirty this morning

(-)  The Class wasn’t dirty this morning

(?)  Was the class dirty this morning ?

B. Present Perfect

Usage: menceritakan kejadian yang sudah terjadi saat ini

TS: - Already, Just, Since, For, Yet

Formula:          S + Have/Has + V3 + O

                        S + Have/Has + not + V3 + O

                        Have/Has + S + V3 + O

*tidak menekankan waktu, tetapi pada kejadian / efeknya*

*have: they, we, I, you*

*has: he, she, it*

EXAMPLE:

1.      Dia sudah menunggu selama 30 menit

(+) He has waited for thirty minutes

(-)  He hasn’t waited for thirty minutes

(?)  Has he waited for thirty minutes ?

C. Past Continous Tense

Usage: menyatakan kegiatan yang sedang terjadi di masa lalu, menceritakan 2 kejadian yang satu sedang berlangsung dan satunya menginterupsi, menceritakan 2 kejadian yang sedang berlangsung.

Time Signal: When / While

Formula =        BE2 + Ving + When + V2

                        BE2 + Ving + While + Ving

Example

1.      Kita sedang menunggu pak presiden

ð  We were waiting for mr. president

2.      Kita sedang melambaikan tangan ketika wartawan memotret

ð  We were moving our hand when the reporter took a picture

3.      Ayah sedang membaca koran ketika ibu sedang memasak

ð  Father was reading a newspaper while mother was cooking

D. Past Perfect

Usage: bercerita 2 kejadian yang satu selesai terlebih dahulu di masa lalu

Time Signal: After / Before

Formula:          After= S + V2 + After + Had + V3

                        Before= S + Had + V3 + Before + V2

Example:

1.      Saya sudah mandi sebelum sarapan

ð  I Had taken a bath before I had breakfast

ð  I Had breakfast after I had taken a bath

A. Recount

Recount Text tells the readers what happened. It retells a past event.

The Generic Structure of the text is:

A.    Orientation: Information about what, who, where, and when

B.     Events: Tell what happened in the past in chronogical order

C.     Reorientation: Sumarry and the closure of events

The Purpose of recount text is to retell past experience / entertain the readers

EXAMPLE:

When, i was celebrating holiday school with my family in Pohsarang, Kediri 4 years ago, i had a change to visit church Pohsarang. It was fantastic time. (Orientation)

Fristly, i straight went to enter the Pohsarang. We went around in there. I saw many statues, my sister took a pictures with statue. Statue of Jesus there was very good. After going around, we had launch. (Events)

This holiday was facinating for me. I wanted to go back in Pohsarang, Kediri sometimes with my family again. (Re-orientation)

B. Narrative

The purpose of the text is to entertain or amuse the readers.

The generic structure of the text:

A.    Orientation ( Introduction ): Introduces main characters, setting, and time

B.     Complication ( Middle ): The problems happens among the characters

C.     Resolution ( Ending ): the problem is resolved

It usually begins with adverbs, such as long time ago, once upon a time, in a far away, long time ago.

The Origin Of City Surabaya

Once upon a time , there were two animals , Sura and Baya name . Sura is the name of the Beast is the Beast shark and Baya the crocodile . They live in the deep sea . After Sura and Baya were looking for some food . Suddenly, Baya see a nice goat . " Yummy is good , this is the most delicious lunch , " said Baya . ' No way ! This is my lunch . You greedy " Sura said . Later they fought for goats . After several hours of fighting, they were very tired . Feels tired of fighting , they live in different places . Sura Baya live in the water and stay in the country.

 Border is the beach , so they do not will fight again . Someday , Sura went to the ground and look for some food in the river . he was very hungry and there was not much food in the sea . Baya was very angry when he knew that Sura broke a promise . they fight again . They both punching and kicking . tail Sura Baya fight . Baya did the same thing to Sura . He bit very hard until Sura finally gave up and returned to the sea . Baya happy . named his final city of Surabaya .
